Grossular and Zircon Mineral Specimens from the York River Skarn Zone Near Bancroft, Ontario

Grossular/ Clinopyroxene York River Skarn Zone, near Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. This now closed site produced some fabulous garnets in the late 1990's for a brief time. I removed the primary mineralized pod over the period of an entire summer and still have some quality pieces. These are all thumbnail specimens mounted in perky boxes. They are nothing short of fantastic. Bright orange/ red garnets in combination with dark green clinopyroxene (likely diopside). Crystals range from a few millimeters to well over 2 cm. The luster is the best you can find, the form very good and the contrasting colors make each of these superior specimens. The garnets are transparent and translucent with internal fractures and the clinos are opaque. Top shelf pieces from a location that is now a provincial park and off limit to collecting. Be sure to read the article on this site.

OKF-369 Grossular and Vesuvianite on Clinopyroxene RESERVED York River Skarn Zone, near Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. Collected by Michael Walter, 1999. Ex Michael Walter collection. This is perhaps my favorite small cabinet specimen from this find. Now that the locality is within a Provincial Park, specimens like this will no longer be found on the market. The piece is a perfectly trimmed small cabinet specimen majoring 6.8 x 5.5 x 4 cm. Perched on it are grossular crystals to 2.3 cm in diameter which are of a wonderful cinnamon brown color. The tiny brown spots are vesuvianites which are sprinkled among the green clinopyroxenes (probably diopside) and garnets. The crystals are damage free but the lower areas of matrix are not mineralized. One crystal is hollow. Wonderful display characteristics, luster and somewhat unusual form to some of the garnets. The piece sits beautifully for display and is far, far underprice at $195
