Rock Island Road Cut, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County, New York

All specimens seen above are Barite

An opening approximately 10 feet above the road’s surface had been known for decades... what was not known was there was a 20 foot solution cavity in the marble directly behind it!  The vug contained hundreds of stalactititic and dendritic clusters of white barite.  Many were also encrustation pseudomorphs after calcite or very rarely after anhydrite.  In rare cases they have a light blue coloration.  Individual crystals are small, up to a centimeter, but the groupings are aesthetic.  Specimens to tens of pounds were discovered in the mud covering the floor of the cavity with the most attractive being in the miniature to small cabinet size ranges.  I acquired several hundred and the remainder are being donated to the New York State Museum.  Some excellent examples are seen here in images that seldom show how attractive they really are.  This occurrence is documented in an article for Mineral News by Dr. Steve Chamberlain.

OKL-914      Barite Stalactites     Rock Island Road Cut, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County, New York, collected 2013.  This is another rare specimen with blue crystals of barite.  The coloration on this one is light, as they always are and nearly impossible to make out in the images.  Approximately one in fifty specimens from this pocket will have any blue in its makeup.  Of those most are damaged (remember this was a collapsed pocket so almost all the specimens recovered were damaged).   This piece is exceptionally large and well coated by white and blue barite plumes.  It measures 11.6 x 8 x 6.2 cm.  35 to 40% of the front of the specimen has crystals with a blue color.  Big crystal groupings to about an inch (2.6 cm) each.  The remainder of the crystals are a bright shiny white.  Sits beautifully on a calcite cleave.  A high quality, damage free specimen... one of two that I need to cull from my collection in order to pay for the purchase of other pieces from this find.  $1,500

OKL-873      Barite casts after Anhydrite    Rock Island Road Cut, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County, New York, collected 2013.  This one is a beautiful coliform stalactite measuring 4.9 cm long ( 4.9 x 2 x 1.3 cm).  It is a barite cast after anhydrite given the tabular form of the individual divergent crystals.  All the anhydrite casts seem to have this general appearance, this one is just more aesthetic and more heavily overgrown than most from the location.  The first pic shows this characteristic best.  This is the first one of these ever offered for sale.  All the others have been kept in my collection or are in the New York State Museum collection.  There were maybe fifteen or so in total from the find.  $195

OKL-877      Barite on Calcite      Rock Island Road Cut, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County, New York, collected 2013.  Here is an uncommon find with barite overgrowing a calcite crystal and showing differential (heavier or secondary growth) on the calcite edges.  All sides except the very base, a contact with the wall rock, are coated by barite crystals.  Both interesting and attractive.  The piece measures 4.5 x 3.8 x 3.1 cm.  No damage.  Nice!   $140

OKL-878      Barite Stalactites     Rock Island Road Cut, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County, New York, collected 2013.  This 8 x 4 x 3.3 cm grouping is composed of intergrown stalactites.  Almost too intricate and complex for description, I am hopeful that the image will do a good job of showing this piece's complexity.  Front side is clean and a little chipping on back.  With most of those being damaged (remember this was a collapsed pocket so almost all the specimens recovered were damaged) the overall condition is excellent.  $200
