Empire State Mine Sphalerites

For better than a decade the old Zinc Corporation of America mines had been bought and sold by speculators. Early in 2018 Titan Mining began preparing the mine (via. the #4 shaft) for operation and in June of 2018 they began producing ore.  The Empire State mine was the name chose by Titan Mining Corporation for the Balmat operation when the acquired these workings. In December of 2018 two narrow veins at the 3,872 foot level were encountered and within these veins gemmy, dark amber colored sphalerites to 4 cm each were encountered.  The crystals average a cm or less, have fine lusters, and show excellent translucence and transparency.  Many are associated with quartz making for nice combination pieces.  The other associated minerals are calcite and pyrrhotite.  The production of specimens was small but their quality was very high.

Sadly, in late February of 2019 the company laid off its miners and is currently only doing exploration.
