Danburite and Diopside                                           Danburite                                   Danburite, Quartz, Diopside                              Tremolite

To quote Bob Jones, Editor of Rock and Gem Magazine, Dec. 2013, p. 40, "You never see these classics today except in museums". gives you an idea of why the specimens to follow are important.

Danburite was named after its discovery in Danbury, Connectict in 1839.  The specimens were so poor that they appear almost massive and as a result there was never proper crystallography done on the specimens from the type locality.  It was not long after that the finest danburites known for the time were discovered on the Van Buskirk farm in northern New York State.  The species was then fully described from crystals found there.  Very little collecting was done at this new locality but, enough material was recovered to feed the important museums of the time.  Today, the site has been rediscovered.  Although collecting is not currently allowed, specimens occasionally surface.  They are seldom aesthetic like the contemporary discoveries in Mexico and Russia but, they are certainly important.

Discovered and recovered by another local field collector, this was a single pocket find of lustrous black/green Tremolite in two generations.  Crystals to 5 cm.  Aesthetic for the species and among the finest ever found in New York State.  Any faces showing lower luster have microscopic layers of talc on their surfaces.  About a half dozen specimens are available in TN to miniature sizes.  Well priced for such important material.
