Mineral Specimens For Sale From the Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia, South West Africa

Tarnowitzite is a variety of aragonite which forms nicely developed, prismatic crystals at Tsumeb.  They are uncommon, but when found are often are in combination with other species such as calcite and smithsonite.

OKL-672

OKL-672     Plumboan Calcite on Tarnowitzite     Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia, South West Africa.  Ex. Thomas G. Fowler collection.  The specimen seen here is 6.2 x 4.2 x 1.5 cm.  The tarnowitzite crystals (a variety of aragonite) are not large but they are beautifully formed and attractively displayed with small, well-formed transparent to translucent rhombs, may of which are interlocking in a line, of honey colored plumboan calcite (SEM/EDX verified, Jan. 2014).  The only damage is where a crystal of an unknown species, probably cerussite, was once attached and is not entirely removedů that is the white patch on the display face.  Still a desirable example.  Green mineral is your guess, I have no idea.  An uncommon classic!  $250

OKL-454     Tarnowitzite on Smithsonite    Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia, South West Africa.  Ex. Thomas G. Fowler collection.  Creamy white, high luster crystals of this variety of aragonite line a seam exposed in a galena rich matrix.  The original matrix was coated by brown smithsonite crystals.  Some can be seen poking out along the edges of the piece but most are covered by the tarnowitzite crystals.  The tarnowitzites are to over a cm each and nicely formed.  8.4 x 5 x 3.7 cm.  No damage to crystallized areas.  $295

OKL-671    Tarnowitzite on Calcite      Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia, South West Africa.  Ex. Thomas G. Fowler collection.   This specimen and the next were the two best examples of this uncommon Tsumeb material in the collection.  The one seen here is 7.6 x 4 x 3.2 cm.  The tarnowitzite crystals (a variety of aragonite) are not large but they are beautifully formed and attractively displayed on well-formed transparent to translucent rhombs of honey colored calcite.  The piece is damage free and only has two small areas of contact, one on the back and one on one end (side).  It displays nicely several ways.  An uncommon classic!  $350

Fowler collection.   This specimen and OKL-671 were the two best examples of this uncommon Tsumeb material in the collection.  The one seen here is 10 x 7 x 6 cm.  The tarnowitzite crystals (a variety of aragonite) are up to 2.2 cm each and they are beautifully formed and attractively displayed on well-formed transparent to translucent rhombs of honey colored calcite.  The piece is damage free and only has a couple areas of contact.  The back is heavily crystallized too, but it is only calcite.  It displays nicely several ways.  An uncommon classic!  $350

OKL-565

OKL-565    Smithsonite with Tarnowitzite    Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia, South West Africa.  Ex. Thomas G. Fowler collection.   An atypical specimen with nice translucent, honey colored calcite rhombs on tan colored smithsonite stringers of micro crystals.  The aragonite, variety tarnowitzite crystals are well formed but small, to about a cm each.  There is one cleaved calcite but it blends in nicely and is not distracting.  Unusual but certainly not visually stunning.  8.5 x 4.5 x 3.3 cm.   $325
